Capsicum, both a useful spice and healthy vegetable

Capsicum is a healthy vegetable and there are various varieties of capsicums which not only makes your meal colorful but also makes it healthy

Capsicum is called by different names depending upon the geographies. In North America and Britain it is called red pepper, green pepper or bell pepper, and in countries like New Zealand, Australia and India it is simply called capsicum.

Capsicum is found to have many health benefits. It is rich in a chemical called capsaicin which helps in weight loss, relieving pain, and has anti-cancerous effects.

Capsicums are found in various colors like green, yellow, red and orange. These colors are because of many phytochemicals found in capsicums. These phytochemicals have antioxidant abilities, thus help in slowing down the aging effect.

  • Pain reliever: Capsicum is used to relieve various types of pains caused through headaches, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, shingles, etc. It is applied on the skin to relieve the pain as the chemical capsaicin appears to reduce pain sensations when applied to the skin.
  • Antioxidants: Capsicums are rich in antioxidants such as vitamin A, vitamin C and vitamin B9 (also called folate or folic acid, which is a water-soluble vitamin). Capsicums are rich source of vitamins A and C. A cup of capsicum can fulfill 100% need of vitamin A and vitamin C. These antioxidants are beneficial for enhancing immunity and keeping body cells healthy by preventing oxidative reactions which leads to wear and tear of the body cells.
  • Anti-cancerous: Capsicums especially, red peppers are good source of a carotenoid or a phytochemical called lycopene. Studies have found lycopene in red pepper reduces the risk of cancers of ovary, bladder, pancreas and prostate.
  • Weight Loss: Capsicum helps in losing weight. It acts in two ways, first it curbs appetite and secondly the pepper in it generates heat that helps in increase of calorie burn activity of the body. These two processes when combined together with exercise and other healthy diet controls can help in losing weight effectively.

Now days, because of its role in weight loss and calorie burn, capsicum is being used in various weight loss pills or supplements.
